Change Not So Good for Musicians

Early in my life, as the Beatles crossed the Atlantic, I developed a passion for music and all that the industry encompasses. As I child I spent a brief period on drums then as a teenager switched to guitar, and later learned enough bass to enable me to earn a  living. During the apex of big hair metal and the dawn of grunge, I spent several years playing bass for 12 Gauge, a popular touring band in the Pacific Northwest.  During this stint, I observed and experienced most of what the music industry offered at the time. I understood the perseverance necessary for booking gigs, the long hours spent practicing parts, the tedium of life on the road, as well as the exposure to unscrupulous promoters, club owners and record executives. On average we received approximately $100 per night per man, a food and beverage tab, and a place to sleep, whether a band house or hotel.  As a four piece band we learned to maximize our earnings by running sound and lights from the stage and booking all of our own gigs.

In 1988, I left the music biz, moved from Seattle to Florida, started a business and a family, and for many years afterward only dabbled in music.  I would occasionally sit in on bass if needed, participate in the worship band at church, or run sound for special events.

After selling my business, finding myself involuntarily single, and suffering a nearly fatal accident, I, during my physical and emotional recovery, found myself smack dab right back in the middle of the music industry. As a result of the subconscious marriage that occurred between my acumen for business and my passion for music, I found myself a sought after commodity by both bands seeking promotion and venues weary from sifting through musicians in an attempt to discover talent. I briefly managed a rising country music star out of Nashville which led to booking arrangements with over twenty other acts and the exclusive representation of several venues within south Florida.  Now, sitting in a chair at a desk looking back over the past 30 years, I cringe at the detrimental change to musicians that has occurred.

Thirty years ago, we had no internet, no cell phones, no personal computers, no home recording, no digital cameras, no camcorders, no low cost printing, no CDs, and no social networking.  We booked gigs in person or over a land based telephone, and we promoted ourselves by producing flyers, posters and cassette tapes (yes cassette tapes) as inexpensively as possible.  Clubs promoted almost exclusively through radio and low quality industry related magazines.  DUIs were rare so bands had followings and groupies that would travel great distances to see their favorite.  Prior to karaoke and the huge growth of DJs and dance house, the law of supply and demand heavily favored the musician. As a musician with only average talent, I enjoyed decent salary as well as a great deal of respect from both fans and the people paying us.

Today, we possess the technology and ability to promote efficiently and inexpensively. Yet as a result of the popularity and influx of karaoke and dance music, we see an unusual degradation of the industry even considering that the skill level and number of players has steadily increased.

I find these changes in the industry both shocking and appalling:

1) The average pay per musician per night remains the same as it was in the late 1970's. Factoring in consumer price increases, inflation, and the value of the dollar, pay should have increased 3 to 3.5 times just to maintain pace with the economy.

2) Venue owners place almost the entire burden of promotion and fan draw on the artists themselves. Bands are no longer judged by talent or originality but by their ability to draw.  Since club owner's would rather hire a mediocre cover band with a following than a very unique original act, musicians now tend to all sound much the same even acknowledging the fact that skill level has increased.

3) Bands lack individuality and originality.  With increased skill level and virtuosity, one would expect original sound to abound but unfortunately we fail to see that.  Too many artists feel compelled to emulate their idol as opposed to discovering their uniqueness. With no one to copy, legends like Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page had no choice but to develop their own sound. If they had felt not the desire to pioneer but only to imitate, rock music would still sound like the delta blues.

4) With the advent of powerful technology like email, texting, and cell phones, I find it ironic to observe that many musicians fail to possess the basic skills required to effectively communicate off of the stage. With increased competition for gigs, I would have assumed that this ability would have increased.

5) Another irony exists as a result of low cost home recording equipment.  With increased skill level and access to recording, one would expect superior sound yet  I observe the unfortunate deterioration of the quality of product.  Although the path to market has shortened, the over saturation  has led to inferior recordings and a steady decrease in music sales.

6) This decrease, fueled by free downloads and file sharing creates an environment in which recording artists find themselves forced to continually tour to earn a living.  This seriously contrasts the old philosophy that break even touring promoted new record sales.  Now break even record sales support touring.

7) Due to takeovers, mergers, buyouts, and consolidation, the media is now controlled by 6 major giants, Time Warner, Walt Disney, Viacom, News Corporation, NBC Universal, and CBS Corporation. In 1983, there were over 50 different companies controlling this information.  This consolidation makes it nearly impossible for rising artists to gain radio airplay.  Play lists are established electronically nationwide making it nearly impossible for a local DJ to spin a local favorite.

I realize that this article will enrage musicians and club owners alike.  No one wants to assume responsibility for anything.  Please believe that I am a huge proponent of live music and care deeply about the quality of life afforded to musicians.  As a result, I will only let this article serve as a vehicle to motivate me to write more offering up my insight on how musicians may book more gigs, promote better, gain radio airplay, and achieve a modicum of success.  Writing this article served primarily as a wake up call to me.

As a disclaimer, please realize that I possess no real credentials as an expert on this subject.  I work in the music industry and I thoroughly enjoy it. The subjects I tend to write about are heartfelt opinions, not necessarily substantiated facts.

Happy Birthday Janis!

Janis Lyn Joplin, born on this day in Port Arthur, Texas, burst into musical prominence in the early 1960's during a very tumultuous time in American history.  The country simultaneously fought am unpopular war in Viet Nam while dealing with tremendous internal strife in regard to civil rights and the equalities that our nation was founded upon.

Janis, along with others like Joan Baez and Jimi Hendrix, symbolized a new generation, one in which man idealized peace and love, as well as the optimistic possibility that we could inhabit earth in harmony with one another.

Janis' gut wrenching, bluesy vocal prowess influenced many others who followed, even after her untimely death in 1970 from an overdose induced by alcohol and heroin.

Happy Birthday Janis on what should have been your 69th!  Rest in Peace, we miss you!

Queen Dementia - Condemned

What would happen by mashing up the thrash metal guitar of Metallica with the ethereal, soaring goth vocals of Lacuna Coil along with the lyrical depth of Staind? I believe the result would sound a lot like Queen Dementia, the hard hitting goth metal trio from Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Difficult to top what they already say about themselves, I submit this quote from the band's Facebook page:
Queen Dementia offers a sound that's aggressively passionate, soulful and intelligent, yet beautiful. Best known for creating a unique sound which stems from a myriad of musical influences, Queen Dementia successfully synthesizes various aspects of psychology, the human condition and emotion into an abstract, often comprehensible musical format that catches you off guard.
Queen Lana takes you on a roller coaster of emotion with her unique vocal style which sets her apart from all other female front women and has been hailed as “One of the finest front women I have ever heard” - (Outloud Magazine). Drawing on influences ranging from PJ Harvey to Maynard Keenan (Tool) makes her sonic range versatile and unpredictable. Lyrically, she explores subjects such as human emotions, loss, politics, religion, cries of the soul, and the trials and tribulations of daily life and in an abstract fashion. The combination of her vocal melodies that rise above her throbbing bass lines defines her as a musician.
Joseph dominates as the only guitar composer of the trio, able to use his prowess to create a wall of sound with his crushing riffs, unforgiving chord progressions and symphonic solos. Drawing on influences ranging from Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin) to Adam Jones (Tool), Joseph has formulated a style all his own which has resulted in the band’s signature sound.
Jav holds it down on drums as the backbone of rhythm for Queen Dementia. Utilizing pounding patterns in contrast with intricate, creative beats complements the melodies, bringing it all together as the glue for the band. Drawing on influences that range from Nicko McBrain (Iron Maiden) to Lars Ulrich (Metallica) Jav successfully blends old school techniques with modern day style which delivers yet another unique element to the band.
Formed in late 2009, Queen Dementia has since rocked audiences from West Palm Beach to the Florida Keys participating in notable shows such as Kryptonite Metalfest, Xtreme Annual Music Festival, and Femme Fest. “Queen Dementia is getting rave reviews as a creative metal band” -(Florida Rock Stars) and successfully have made a name for themselves in the local South Florida scene. With the latest addition of Jav on drums, the band has positioned itself to establish a footprint beyond hometown boundaries. Queen Dementia is female fronted, melodic metal at its best.

I certainly look forward to experiencing this band live in the near future.  Enjoy this clip released New Year's Eve of their most resent single, "Condemned."

Van Halen New Single - Tattoo

Maintaining the tease that began New Year's Eve when they released their new album cover for "A Different Kind of Truth", continued as they debuted the band reunited with David Lee Roth at the 250 seat Cafe Wha in Greenwich Village, released 2012 tour dates with tickets going on sale this morning, leaked track listing from new CD, launched teaser video on YouTube, and now today, officially release their first single from the same, "Tattoo".

"Tattoo" proves itself classic Van Halen, reminiscent of their first release, "Van Halen", from 1977.  If you're musical taste have evolved into the numetal or matalcore genres, this music may be too tame for your taste.  However, if you love classic rock but tire of the same AC/DC and Led Zeppelin tunes blasted from your radio, then this tune's for you!

Shine On You Crazy Diamond

Friday marked the birthday of one of rock music's greatest but most overlooked pioneers, the deceased Syd Barrett, original member and founder of psychedelic innovators, Pink Floyd.

Syd founded the band along with Roger Waters, Nick Mason, and Richard Wright in 1965.  Originally, Barrett fronted the band and wrote most of their material until 1967 when due to mental illness and heavy use of LSD, he acted very erratically and unpredictable. He would at times play one chord through an entire show, or slowly detune his guitar while playing, and at other times wander around the stage aimlessly. The band brought in David Gilmour at that time to compensate for Barrett's lack of dependability, and to fill in on guitar and vocals as needed.  Eventually, according to Gilmour, the band just stopped picking Syd up for gigs.

After his departure from Pink Floyd, Syd never returned to the limelight but instead focused on painting and gardening until his death in 2006.  The band paid tribute to Barrett often, most notably with 1975's smashing album "Wish You Were Here".

Enjoy David Gilmour below playing "Shine On You Crazy Diamond", an incredible tribute to friend and Pink Floyd's founder, Syd Barrett.

Van Halen announces 2012 Tour with DLR

Van Halen publicists recently announced, through a video posted on their website, a 2012 major tour with original front man David Lee Roth but have failed to clear rumors of the new album that may be released on Interscope Records sometime early in the new year.  Van Halen last recorded with Roth in 1984 before his replacement by Sammy Haggar.  Original bassist Michael Anthony will not play in the new line up, which also includes Eddie's son Wolfgang, a member of the band since 2007, on bass.

Roth toured with the band briefly in 2007 and 2008 and it looks like this recent announcement serves to patch up the strife created more than 25 years ago.

No your dates have been announced as of now but will be shortly as tickets go on sale through Ticketmaster beginning January 10th.

If they are anywhere within 150 miles of Fort Myers, FL, you will find me there!

Enjoy this video from the official VH site announcing the tour.

Album Preview - KoRn - The Path of Totality

Nu metal godfathers, multi-platinum selling KoRn prove themselves again with more ground breaking, genre bending intensity with their newest release, "The Path of Totality", a mash up with various techno, dubstep and electronic dance artists, including Skrillex, Feed Me, Noisia, Excision, Downlink, 12th Planet, Flinch, and Datsik, as well as rapper DJ Jake Stanczak better know as Kill the Noise.

Surprisingly, the tuned down baritone guitars custom made for Munky blend perfectly with the throbbing, pulsating dubstep beats of the various contributors.  This incredible masterpiece evidently defines a new genre, should it be called nu techno, techno metal, or my favorite, dubmetal?  The highly original sound mimics no one but lends into the gothic dance music one hears at infamous clubs such as The Castle in Ybor City. With samplings of bag pipes, John Kennedy, and a various sundry of other sound effects, there exists almost no pause between tracks as one blends perfectly into the other creating a phenomenal overall composition. From the opening "Chaos Lives in Everything" to the finale, "Tension", KoRn and their collaborating dubsteppers weave one unimaginable metallic symphony.

I highly recommend this hard edged, pulsating danceable KoRn.  The Path of Totality makes a wise addition to any music collection.  I've heard a ton of new music this year and would personally like to nominate this work as album of the year as well as album cover art of the year.

Enjoy this clip of KoRn's "Narcissistic Cannibal" featuring Skrillex and Kill the Noise, the first single released to radio stations from the new album.

Brian "Head" Welch - Paralyzed

Brian Welch, better know as "Head" shocked the rock world in February of 2005 when he announced to his band mates, mulit-platinum selling Korn, and the world that he was quitting the band to pursue a closer relationship with God after dedicating his life to Christ in front of 10,000 people at Bible Valley Fellowship in Bakersfield, California.

After pioneering the genre now known as nu metal, Head felt convicted to leave behind rock n' roll's life of addiction and lustful behavior to focus on raising his daughter Jennea.  God's power allowed him to leave behind a nearly lifelong addiction to methamphetamine and liquor, as well as a propensity toward pornography. He has pursued this passion ruthlessly tattooing "JESUS" across his right knuckles when his hand had caused him to sin and then later "Mark 9:42" across his left hand for the same reason.

The verse reads:
"If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off.  It is better for you to enter life maimed than with two hands to go into hell, where the fire never goes out."
Head recorded a solo album and wrote a book, both titled "Save Me From Myself",  in 2008 and debuted the single "Flush" at the Cornerstone Festival in Bushnell, Illinois.  He wrote and played nearly every instrument on the CD so necessity urged him to put a band together for live shows.  Musicians from all over the world auditioned through YouTube videos before the best auditioned for Head personally. The final line-up included keyboardist Brian Ruedy, Scott Von Heldt on guitar and backing vocals, guitarist Ralph Patlan, Michael Valentine on bass, and drummer Dan Johnson.

The newly formed band hit the road on tour immediately following rehearsals, headlining at the main stage during Cornerstone 2009 and the Exit concert in Las Vegas with Flyleaf and Blindside.

I just happened to be at the event on July 2, 2009 at the Cornerstone Festival.  Please enjoy the video below of Head performing "Adonai."

Due to the pressures of touring, maintaining a lifestyle pleasing to God, and raising a daughter, Head has faced extreme difficulty finding time to record and master his sophomore solo release.  He has been in and out of the studio since the spring of 2010 and hopes to have the album completed and released by April 2012.

He released the single, "Paralyzed" in October of 2011 as an electronic download on iTunes and other outlets.  When compared to his debut album, one notices a continuing maturity in Head's music and walk with the Lord, as well as the advantages of collaborating with other musicians.  The song has already enjoyed quite a bit of commercial success.  Please enjoy this new hit as posted by Head's official website.

Head, keep rocking and loving Jesus! You're an inspiration to many of us as we face and deal with the struggles of living in the "world".

Jon Bon Jovi is Alive and Well

Whether or not he's "Wanted Dead or Alive" or "Living on a Prayer", I confirmed by telephone this morning with a spokesperson from the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank, New Jersey that Mr. Bon Jovi appeared there for a benefit concert last night many hours after his rumored death and both looked and acted extremely healthy and performed well.  My contact at the venue seemed a bit disturbed by all of the hype and evidently Bon Jovi had quite a bit of fun with it himself last night.  Although plastic surgery has played a role, you can see that Jon does look pretty darn good for a 49 year old man that spent over half of his life on the road enjoying the perks of rock 'n roll!

Jon Bon Jovi Dead at 49 - True or Hoax

Rock Star and 1980's icon Jon Bon Jovi died earlier today at the age of 49, when paramedics found him in a coma at the Empress Hotel where he lives in Asbury Park, NJ after performing a World Christmas tour concert the night prior in North Beach Park.

Paramedics found him not breathing when they arrived and rushed him to Jersey Shore Medical Center where he later suffered cardiac arrest. The coroner has not yet performed an autopsy, so at this time, foul play and drug abuse cannot be ruled out.

UPDATE 6:30PM: This story may be a hoax that started on Twitter.   I am now attempting to get to the bottom of the story to determine it's authenticity.  Please check back regularly for updates.

UPDATE: 6:45PM:  Many conflicting reports are currently circulating the internet.  No Bon Jovi publicist has confirmed or denied this story at this time.  Apparently he is scheduled to perform at a charity event tonight so we should know for sure if he shows up smiling.

UPDATE: 7:15P:  Jon is scheduled to perform tonight at Hope Concert V at the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank, NJ later tonight.  Hopefully, he will appear and put this possible rumor to rest.

UPDATE: 7:23PM:  Apparently Jon is Alive and Well.  It looks like this photo was just taken and published around the internet.   I'm still waiting to hear back from the Count Basie Theatre when he arrives.

UPDATE 7:37PM I spoke briefly to a JBJ spokeswoman who assured me that the singer is alive and well and performing tonight.  So bury the rumor.

EP Review - Brian Howe - Emotions

I've both procrastinated and agonized over writing this review of former Bad Company lead vocalist and fellow Lee County resident, Brian Howe's, self proclaimed farewell to the world of music. I promised Brian and my readers that I would publish a review of this EP several days ago but unfortunately after listening to these five songs repeatedly I've hesitated out of respect for one of rock 'n roll's finest voices, one that I hold in the same regard as the likes of Sammy Hagar and Chris Cornell.

In promoting "Emotions", Brian claims, "It marks the end of my recording career. I did not make it with a record company as I wanted it to be personal from me to you. I am very proud of this effort which was influenced by the love of my life. Please tell all of your friends on Facebook about this record and spread the word. It will be strange to never record again but with the advent of free download sites and record companies with no clue the time is right to retire. I hope you enjoy listening to real "Emotions" as much as I did making it."

As a vocalist who cut his teeth on Ted Nugent's "Penetrator" album, then not only stepped into but filled the extremely large shoes of Bad Company's Paul Rodgers then culminated with the solo effort, "Circus Bar", considered one of 2010's finest recordings, it's hard to believe that this is the same man behind the whiny drivel on "Emotions".

Although Brian added a distinctly pop flavor to both Ted Nugent and Bad Company, he still maintained the ability to rock and unleash those powerful pipes. His songwriting ability also appeared strong on Bad Company's "Holy Water" and his solo effort, Circus Bar". But, unfortunately, on "Emotions", the writing flows weakly like a teenage emo girl sharing a letter with a friend over a broken first love. The vocals share the same weakness and tremble like a drunkard in a bar crying and pitying himself over the wife who disappeared. When I listen to this EP, I envision Brian, martini in hand, sitting at a piano with a fire roaring in the background reveling in lost love with his Fort Myers fishing buddies or his rugby mates from Portsmouth.

I deeply desire that I could stress the highlights of this EP but all 5 tunes echo the same pathetic, hollow message. Nothing the slightest bit uplifting or truly moving can be found on this album. While listening, one feels the life and emotion being sucked from their being.

Brian, I realize that surrounded by cronies, many are patting you on the back complimenting you for this effort and congratulating you for leaving the record companies by the roadside but I think we all know the truth. No record company would touch this mess. We've all lost love at some point in our life and albeit difficult, we pick ourselves up and move on. We don't wallow in it forever. I remember you sharing the same bitterness with me about your ex over a beer in Daytona Beach seven years ago. Don't allow "Emotions" to delineate the end of your career. You are better than this. Your only 58 years old, still young for retirement by any measure so please remember as fans, we'd prefer to see you go out with a bang rather than a fizzle!

Album Preview - Nickelback - Here and Now

Today, I had the unique opportunity to preview an album prior to release, Nickelback's "Here and Now". Although I've been labelled a lover of "redneck rock" by my step-son, the talented record producer Nathan Horst, I still possess somewhat of a negative bias toward Nickelback. For those not in the know (including me), I believe that the "redneck rock" genre defines itself by the likes of Kid Rock, Godsmack, Creed, and yes, Nickelback.

I imagine that we need to establish somewhat of a background or parameters before really reviewing this new CD. Drop D tuning, or C or however low you want to go has been around for quite some time. Black Sabbath's Tony Iommi pioneered this method after losing the tips of a couple of fingers in an industrial accident to enable playing and transitioning between power chords. Niravana and KorN perfected this sound, Creed's Mark Tremonti added the technical virtuosity, and now every band on earth feels that guitar should always be played this way and vocals need to closely resemble the baritone of Eddie Vedder. Nickelback certainly makes no exception to this new rule.

My prejudice toward Nickelback stems from the fact that most of their music sounds the same. It's difficult to differentiate one tune from another. But I must admit that if you realize this and only desire to own one of Nickleback's releases, this is the one to buy. The songs are well written, the riffs are tight, the production is good and it's very typical Nickelback, songs about rock 'n roll living, hard drinking and loving, then whining about lost love.

Released back in September, the first single from this CD, "Bottoms Up", a hard partying, tune about drinking everything in sight surprises no one but sure rocks as do "This Means War", "Midnight Queen", and "Gotta Get Me Some". The first half of this CD really cranks with typical Nickelback tunes about partying, sex with sluts, and heavy drinking but then it slowly fades into more of a Wizard-of-Oz type of dreamland with some very slow ballads about lost love like "Lullaby", "Trying Not to Love You", and "Holding Onto Heaven".

The real surprise from this CD is the song, "When We Stand Together", a song about ending war and world hunger, with lyrics that echo more U2 than Nickelback, and a nice danceable beat.

Nickelback attempts to change it up a bit with the faint techno background on "Kiss it Good-Bye" but I believe that Chad Kroeger knows his limitations, feels comfortable with them, and stays well within those boundaries.

Ironically, the CD ends with something as close to a love song as I've ever heard from Nickelback, another ballad titled "Don't Ever Let it End".

So as a critic, I'm forced to say that "Here and Now" is like all other Nickelback recordings but as a fan of redneck rock, I say this one gets your feet and butt moving so rock on! If you own no Nickelback, this is a good place to start and if you are a fan, I know you'll be racing out for the pre-sales to line this one up with the 6 others in your collection.

Enjoy this clip of the single "When We Stand Together"
