Large Hadron Collider

The threat of disaster concerns many with today's commissioning of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), built by the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) and located near Geneva, Switzerland. Is it possible for a miniature black hole to be created with such gravitational force that nothing could escape, a force powerful enough to engulf the entire earth and eventually the whole Milky Way Galaxy?

In reality, we harness too little energy on earth to create one of these miniature black holes. But even if one were to appear due to some quantum fluctuation, it should quickly dissipate due to the emission of Hawking radiation. Although by far the world's largest particle accelerator, the LHC possesses insufficient power to spark apocalypse. So drop the law suits, fire this baby up and let's find that elusive Higgs boson!
